How to Safeguard Your Home Before You Leave for a Vacation

Summer means out of town or out of the country vacations. However, you wouldn't be able to fully enjoy this if your home is not fully secured. That's why we're here to help. Here are some of the proven tips that would allow you to protect your home while you're out.

1. Install a Video Security System

With a CCTV camera, you'll have the first line of defense against theft and break-ins. Make sure that you install them in key areas, such as the yard, back and front doors, entryways, and rooms with valuables.

For an added layer of security, you can also install hidden cameras that are disguised as enclosures. These are virtually undetectable, which means criminals won't even have the idea that they're being monitored.

2. Hide Your Valuables

Before you leave for a vacation, double check your valuables and make sure they're well hidden. For expensive gadgets and electronics, put them away from your window. As for other valuables, such as jewelry, money, credit cards, and rare coins, better lock them in a safe.

3. Don't Turn Off the Lights

Thieves usually target homes that aren't well-lit, because this allows them to easily break-in without getting noticed. Not just that, it's also a sign that no one was left in the house. To prevent that from happening, make sure that your home is lit adequately even when you're away. By installing indoor timers, these lights will automatically turn on and off depending on how it was set.

4. Make Sure All the Doors and Windows Are Locked

Obviously, you have to lock all your doors and windows before leaving. However, there are cases where you'll forget this, especially if you are too excited for your trip. Make it a habit to double check these places, and it would be helpful if you can ask a family member to do the same.

Don't forget to check the garage door. Make sure it's also locked, and if it's an automatic garage door, better unplug it for extra protection.

5. Inform the Post Office About Your Trip

If you'll be gone for a couple of days, better let your post office know and ask them to hold the mail. You can also ask a trusted neighbor to pick up your mail every now and then.

6. Unplug the Electronics

You don't want to catch your home on fire or damage your electronics. To prevent those, better unplug everything up and you wouldn't have anything to worry about.

7. Don't Advertise Your Vacation Online

It's never advisable to advertise your vacation on social media. This just increasing the chances of thieves breaking in, as they could have alerts that no one is in the house.

8. Give the Heating and Cooling Systems a Check

Before leaving for a vacation, the HVAC systems should also be checked and ensure that they're functioning properly.

9. Landscape

Lastly, if you'll be gone for a couple of months, it wouldn't hurt if you trim the bushes near the security cameras first.

Safeguarding your home is not as difficult as it may sound. By following the tips discussed above, you'll be guaranteed that your assets are well protected even while you're on a vacation.
